Choiceworks on Android - User Guides

Choiceworks on Android

Choiceworks is now on Android phones and tablets. These short guides walk you through it, one calm step at a time.

The Android version has three board types: Schedule, Waiting, and Feelings. You build boards with your own photos and your own recorded voice, and everything stays on your device unless you choose to share it. A few things work differently from the iPhone and iPad version, and those differences are listed honestly at the bottom of this page.
Getting started: your first board
1

Tap the big + button

On the main screen, tap the large round + button. The Create New Board window opens.

2

Pick a board type

Choose the board that fits the moment:

  • Schedule, for a step-by-step routine like morning or bedtime
  • Waiting, for the hard minutes between now and the good thing
  • Feelings, for naming a feeling and choosing what helps
3

Open the board and start building

Tap any image spot to add a picture and a label. Editing must be on to build. If tapping does nothing, open the gear (Settings) menu and turn on Editing.

Building buttons with your own photos and voice
1

Tap an image spot on your board

With Editing on, tap the spot where you want your picture. The image editor opens.

2

Add your own photo

Tap Take Photo (Camera) to snap a new one, or Choose from Photo Library to use one you already have. A photo of your child's real toothbrush or your real car means more than any stock drawing.

3

Record your own voice

Tap the microphone button and say the words, like "Brush your teeth." Tap it again to stop. When your child taps the button on the board, they hear you.

Timers
1

Add a timer to a task

With Editing on, tap Add Timer on a task and pick how long it should run.

2

Walk away if you need to

The timer keeps running if you leave the board or even close the app. When time is up, your phone shows a Timer finished notification and plays a sound.

3

Pick the sound

Open the gear (Settings) menu and tap Timer Settings to choose the sound that plays when a timer ends.

Back up your boards
1

Open the gear (Settings) menu

On the main screen, tap the gear (Settings) icon.

2

Tap Back Up Everything

Choiceworks packs all your boards, pictures, and recordings into one file that ends in .choiceworks.

3

Save the file somewhere safe

The share screen opens. Pick where to keep it:

  • Save to Google Drive
  • Email it to yourself
  • Quick Share it to another device
Restore a backup
1

Find your backup file

Open the .choiceworks file wherever you kept it, in Drive, in your email, or in your Files app, and tap it.

2

Confirm the restore

Choiceworks opens and asks before it changes anything. A restore replaces what is on the device with what is in the backup, so say yes only when that is what you want.

Sharing a board with another Android family
1

Open the board you want to share

Tap the Share icon at the top right and choose Share Interactive Board.

2

Send the file

Choiceworks makes a single file that ends in .choiceworks, with the pictures and recordings inside. Send it by Quick Share, email, or Drive.

3

The other person taps the file

On their Android device, they tap the .choiceworks file and the board imports into their Choiceworks, ready to use. They need Choiceworks for Android installed. This works between Android devices only.

The passcode lock
1

Turn on the passcode

Open the gear (Settings) menu and switch Passcode on. Enter a new 4-digit passcode and save it.

2

What it protects

The passcode is asked whenever someone tries to turn Editing on or off. Your child can use the boards freely, but cannot change or delete them.

3

If you forget it

Tap Forgot passcode? on the passcode screen, then Start 24-Hour Reset. A red banner counts down on every screen so nobody can start a reset quietly. Entering the correct passcode at any time cancels it. After 24 hours the lock is removed, the app tells you, and you can set a new passcode. Your boards are never touched by any of this.

Differences from the iPhone and iPad version
!

An honest note

Choiceworks for Android is a full app, not a copy of the iOS one. Here is what is different, plainly:

  • Your boards live on your device and nothing is uploaded anywhere. Back Up Everything makes a copy you control. Use it to move to a new phone or to keep a safe copy.
  • Android and iPhone each keep their own boards. A board built on Android stays with Android, and an iOS backup opens on iOS.
  • Three board types: Schedule, Waiting, and Feelings. The Feelings Scale board is not on Android yet.
  • English only for now.
  • Phones stay in portrait. Tablets can rotate.

Questions make the app better

Some of the most valuable help we get comes from users. If you have a question, ask it. Twenty-five other people are stuck on the same spot and stayed quiet. If something does not work the way you expected, or you wish the app did something it does not, write to info@beevisual.com. A speech pathologist in Australia raised his hand this month. It made our day, and the app got better for everyone.

Helpful tip

Make a backup before you hand the device to anyone, before a big change, and any time you have built something you would hate to lose. It takes under a minute.
